International Patents: Aluminum in Transportation Applications

Editor’s Note: Driven by the demand for lightweight materials in the automotive industry, the transport segment remains the largest market segment in the global aluminum market. In 2024, this segment accounted for a market share of some 28% (Figure 1)—a figure that is expected to increase annually over the next decade.1


Not surprisingly, China’s transportation sector accounts for the largest share, followed by Europe and then North America. In the U.S., transportation accounted for 35% of the aluminum and aluminum products market in 2024.2
The largest sub-segment in the transportation sector remains automotive. Lots of aluminum is being used in passenger vehicles in structural components, powertrains, and other applications, in the form of castings, extrusion, and sheet. The reason for this is clear: Lightweighting improves fuel efficiency and lessens greenhouse gas emissions, which are still among the drivers for internal combustion engine vehicles.
Around 20% of greenhouse gas emissions are generated by the transportation sector, according to research from the International Energy Agency.3 Therefore, putting transportation vehicles on a diet is necessary toward cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
Of course, transportation as the aluminum industry’s largest market segment includes more than automotive. Aluminum is a popular choice for car bodies in high-speed trains, as well as in the bodies and other structural applications used for street and transit buses. In addition, shipbuilders build massive vessels with their hulls, cabins, and structural parts in aluminum, and fishing boats and pleasure crafts also use a lot of aluminum.
The inherent properties of this metal are just so incredibly useful across the transportation sector. Add to that the growing appetite for secondary metal and an improving reputation as a sustainable material, and it is easy to see how aluminum will remain a hot item in the transportation segment.

Dunham (USA) — The invention provides a vehicle-mounted bike carrier designed to simplify the loading, unloading and transport of heavy electric bicycles. A main feature is an electric hydraulic lifting mechanism that raises and lowers e-bikes, eliminating the need for manual lifting and reducing physical strain. The carrier includes a sliding hitch that allows access to the vehicle’s tailgate or trunk without detachment, and foldable cradles that function as ramps for easy bike loading and securely hold the wheels during transport. When not in use, the carrier compacts into a small, wheeled platform for convenient storage, making it beneficial for elderly users, those with physical disabilities, and anyone needing an easier way to transport heavy e-bikes. It is an advantage of the invention to be made from durable materials like aluminum, for strength and longevity.

 

US12347834B1 — MODULAR HIGH-CURRENT BATTERY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM — Towflexx Miltech Inc. (USA) — An aircraft tow vehicle comprises a vehicle body, a turntable lifting unit coupled to the vehicle body configured to engage with an aircraft nose landing gear, and a modular high-current battery management system. The system includes at least one removable battery pack module housed within the vehicle body, comprising a battery frame housing a plurality of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries, a controller to monitor and control the batteries, a high-current DC power relay for managing current flow, at least one supercapacitor to manage changes in current flow, and at least one semiconductor device to regulate voltage and current levels. This enables the tow vehicle to perform efficient aircraft towing operations. The battery frame (602) may be constructed from lightweight aluminum alloys to minimize overall weight while providing robust structural support. In addition, the frame may include integrated cooling channels or heat sinks to facilitate thermal management of the battery cells, potentially improving performance and longevity.

 

US12397864B1 — CONVERTIBLE TRAILER — Nicholas Ryan Hall (USA) — A trailer convertible between step deck trailer and flatbed trailer configurations includes a frame, wheel and axle assemblies supported on the frame, an upper deck at the front of the frame, a lower deck configured for vertical movement on a vertical slide rail, a controller for upward and downward movement of the lower deck, at least one locking support beam, and landing gear deployable to support the convertible trailer while it is parked for loading. An air lift jack assembly is configured to raise the lower deck, and an air pressure release valve is configured to release air pressure to lower the lower deck. The wheel and axle assemblies may be configured for forward-backward and/or upward-downward movement. The convertible trailer (100) and components may be made of aluminum, and may have an inner support made of wood, aluminum or steel.

 

US12391187B1 — CONVERTIBLE CARRIER RACK AND PLATFORM — Crooked Cedar Designs LLC (USA) — Vehicles for transportation have inherently limited cargo-carrying capacity based on vehicle size and external carrying ability, with external cargo transport typically involving roof-mounted or trailer-mounted devices. This device provides supplemental cargo carrying ability together with a flat, stable workspace, thereby negating the need to carry multiple devices to achieve the different goals. The device can be used in many applications, with a particular application as an automotive attachment to replace a roof or trailer cargo rack, where the cargo rack can be manipulated to function as a type of table. Embodiments of this disclosure include a flat surface with rails for the purpose of carrying cargo while attached to a vehicle, carried, or somehow otherwise transported. In various embodiments, one or more rails can pivot, rotate or detach and re-attach so as to convert to legs to form a table by use of the same flat surface. Components of the device can be fabricated from various types of materials, including aluminum.

 

US12345002B1 — SMART SPEED BUMP AND METHODS FOR ENERGY GENERATION — Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University (Saudi Arabia) — An energy-generating speed bump assembly and a method for generating electrical energy integrate mechanical shock absorption with hydraulic power generation in a subterranean housing. The assembly includes a speed bump mounted within a channel configured for controlled vertical displacement. A helical compression spring connects the speed bump to a piston oil pump, converting vehicular kinetic energy into hydraulic pressure through a coordinated mechanical-hydraulic interface. The modular design of the assembly facilitates standardized installation within conventional roadway infrastructure. The speed bump (110) may have a middle core layer with an aluminum alloy framework, providing structural rigidity and ensuring dimensional stability under dynamic loading conditions. Moreover, the channel (120) is fabricated from hard-anodized aluminum with surfaces maintaining a flatness with low tolerance, and the U-shaped bracket (156) may be manufactured from high-strength aluminum alloy.

 

US12351286B1 — INFLATABLE OAR FRAME FOR A WATERCRAFT — Ideal LLC (USA) — Inflatable watercraft can be constructed of flexible tubes which are inflated with air or another gas. Oars can be a means of propulsion for inflatable watercraft. Oars interface with the inflatable watercraft through a rigid metallic frame secured to the inflatable watercraft called an “oar frame.” Oars connect to this frame via oar towers coupled on either side of the oar frame. There would be a substantial advantage in an inflatable oar frame to which oar towers removably couple to provide the interface between the oars and the inflatable watercraft. The inflatable watercraft and inflatable oar frame can be transported in a deflated and folded condition and readily inflated at the location of use and deflated subsequent to use obviating the need for the trailer, trailer parking space and watercraft storage space along with the associated expense. In this invention, the oar tower base plates (21) can be made from a rigid material, such as aluminum.

 

US12280713B1 — OVERHEAD CEILING LIGHTS FOR VEHICLES — Christian Nielsen and Jakub Gregor (USA), Martin Suvak and Daniel Stenko (Slovakia) — Various types of lights are provided in a passenger cabin of any transportation system, such as reading lights and indicator lights. These lights are generally mounted on the ceiling above a passenger seat or the bulkhead wall beside a passenger. The device includes a faceplate, keypad, PCB, body, light module, and an outer mounting compression ring body. The main objective of this invention is directed to a multipurpose overhead ceiling device for vehicles that does not protrude significantly from the ceiling surface. The faceplate is preferably made from a rigid material that is light in weight, such as aluminum.

 

US12304367B1 — MODULAR VAN SYSTEM — Royce John Sullivan and Jerry Stanley Sullivan (USA) — Recreational vehicles, vans and other vehicles with cargo areas have long been used for transportation and temporary living quarters. This invention is a modular bed and seat system for use in a vehicle’s rear cargo area. The system comprises a pair of side panels and multiple support panels. Each side panel has six sides and includes mounting features on its inner side. The support panels are telescoping, with two pieces that engage to form a complete panel. The support panels can be compressed and then released to engage with the side panels’ mounting features. The design facilitates easy installation, removal and reconfiguration within the vehicle, making it a versatile solution for various vehicle types and user needs. Its side panels (30), bed risers (140) and crossbars (150) may be constructed from sturdy materials such as aluminum.

 

US12397729B1 — SIDE UNDERRIDE GUARD — Hcew Ip Leasing LLC (USA) — The invention is directed to side impact guard systems, such as a side underride guard for vehicles, including trailers for tractor-trailer rigs. In a first aspect of the invention, the side underride guard has an effective ground clearance on flat ground that is above bumpers and tires of the standard automobile as defined by the NHTSA but within the tire lift zone of wheel wells and below the top of structural elements at the back of the engine compartment. As a result, the body of the automobile and its frame below the windshield will reduce the likelihood of intrusion of the vehicle frame into the automobile passenger compartment. The side underride guard includes vertical sections extending downwardly from the structural siderail of the trailer. A horizontal beam extending longitudinally of the vehicle is fixed below the vehicle structural siderail to the lower ends of the vertical sections. The vertical section (110), horizontal section (112), and diagonal sections (114) can be formed from metal plates, tubes, formed angles, channels, and the like. If aluminum is used, then these sections can be made of tubes.

 

US12247362B1 — ROAD POTHOLE FIXER — University of Kuwait — The disclosure relates to a remote-controlled pothole repairing apparatus, which is designed to promote the safety of road repair personnel by enabling road repair workers to stand in a safe location while remotely controlling the apparatus to fill potholes in the surface of the road or in any other paved structure. The apparatus is configured to clean a pothole free of debris by using a rotatable brush that can be lowered into the pothole. After the cleaning operation, the apparatus can be used to pour an asphalt mix in the cleaned pothole, then spread the mix around the pothole by using a grader blade. The frame of the apparatus may include a frame (100) of sidewalls made from aluminum.

 

US12280857B1 — SEAT SLIDE-LOCK SYSTEM — Protomet Corp (USA) — Watercraft seating plays a crucial role in ensuring passenger comfort, safety, and enjoyment during marine activities. Traditionally, boat seats have been fixed in place or offered limited adjustment capabilities. However, modern watercraft designs often incorporate sliding seat systems that allow for greater flexibility in positioning and space utilization. The present disclosure provides a seat slide-lock system including a seat slide rail having a longitudinal axis and defining at least one detent, and a seat movable along the longitudinal axis of the seat slide rail. In some implementations, the seat slide rail (110) may be constructed from corrosion-resistant materials such as marine-grade aluminum, which may help prevent degradation when exposed to moisture or saltwater environments and enhance the system’s durability and longevity.

 

US12330736B1 — SINGLE-WHEELED VEHICLE WITH INCREASED TRAVEL RANGE — Float Supply LLC (USA) — Single-wheel electric vehicles are often used for personal transportation because they are portable and easy to operate. They often take the form of a board that surrounds the vehicle’s single wheel. The wheel contains a hub motor that in turn surrounds an axle that connects the single wheel to the board. A significant limitation of prior art vehicles, however, is that the vehicle’s travel range is limited by the vehicle’s battery capacity. In this disclosure, the hub motor includes an outer rotor which encloses a stator that in turn encloses an interior chamber within the motor that may be used to hold an electronic controller. The rotor (25) is preferentially formed from a metal material with high heat conductivity, such as aluminum. The additional capacity provided by the interior chamber allows the electric vehicle to hold more battery capacity, thereby extending the range of the electric vehicle between recharges.

 

US12240421B1 — TWO-SPEED TRAILER JACK WITH FRICTION CLUTCH — SOS Solutions, Inc. (USA) — Many types of trailers that are towed by trucks are connected to the trucks by a releasable coupling such as a gooseneck coupling, a fifth-wheel coupling or a bumper pull coupling. After the trailer is released from the truck and is no longer supported by the truck at the forward end of the trailer, a lifting device, such as a jack, is often used to support the trailer floor or bed, typically in a position horizontal to the ground. The lifting device includes one or more vertically oriented columns, and a vertical leg is mounted on the column. One aspect of the subject matter described in this specification is embodied in a linear jack. The linear jack can include an outer tube, a first rotating screw, a coarse nut, a first sleeve, a second rotating screw, and a second sleeve. Various components of the lifting device (200) may be made from a metal, such as aluminum.

 

US12233807B1 — VEHICLE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY — Ford Global Technologies LLC (USA) — An assembly includes a seat assembly defining a seat-forward direction. This assembly includes a middle console adjacent to the seat assembly, and a first airbag inflatable from an uninflated position to an inflated position. The first airbag is supported by the seat assembly in the uninflated position and the inflated position. The assembly includes a second airbag inflatable from an uninflated position to an inflated position. The second airbag in the uninflated position and the inflated position is forward of the seat assembly in the seat-forward direction. The assembly includes an inflator supported by the middle console, the inflator operatively connected to the first airbag and the second airbag to provide inflation medium. The vehicle frame and the vehicle body (34) may be of any suitable material, such as aluminum.

 

US12269432B1 — BICYCLE RACK THAT IS REVERSIBLY ATTACHABLE TO A PICKUP TRUCK BED WITH A BED SHELL OR BED CAP — Russell Sutliff (USA) — The bicycle rack of this invention sits on either side of the truck bed like a saddle bag to provide clearance for the bed shell or bed cap. The rack includes a special base plate assembly that is a custom-shaped rigid plate assembly. The base plate assembly has a complex shape that was designed to yield high strength and rigidity in order to provide solid and stable attachment of a bicycle to the bicycle rack and the bicycle rack to the pickup truck. The base plate assembly (10) is the primary source of the substantial rigidity and sturdiness of the bicycle rack, and it may be made of aluminum. In “best mode,” this should be a one-piece structure.

 

US12330602B1 — CAR WASH TOOL AND METHOD OF USE — Quick Quack Car Wash Holdings LLC (USA) — In the rapidly evolving automotive industry, the demand for advanced and efficient car wash systems has increased significantly. Traditional car wash facilities often struggle to efficiently and thoroughly clean vehicles. In this disclosure, the car wash tool includes a shaft, wherein the shaft is configured to rotate about a rotation axis, and a plurality of washing components configured to rotate along with the rotation of the shaft. The supporting frame in this disclosure is a structural framework that provides stability and support for the various components and mechanisms of the system. The supporting frame (108) may include aluminum, while the shaft (112) may include an aluminum rod, chosen for its lightweight yet strong properties.

 

US12252070B1 — BLINKER MODULE — Off Road Engineering LLC (USA) — In general, offroad enthusiasts, in particular utility task vehicle (UTV) or side-by-side drivers, are often riding solo in their vehicles and want to control their aftermarket accessories without removing their hands from the steering wheel. Today, these vehicles do not tend to have any such mechanism by which to control their accessories. In this disclosure, there is contemplated a blinker module for controlling external turn signals. The blinker module includes a housing, a movable lever extending outward from one side of the housing, electronic components disposed within the housing to convey a position from the movable lever to the external signals, and a wire opening disposed on the rear of the housing. The housing of the blinker module as well as the lever may be made from a lightweight, yet strong metal, such as aluminum.

 

US12253238B1 — VEHICLE LIGHTING DEVICE — Hyundai Mobis Co., Ltd. (South Korea) — One aspect of the invention provides a vehicle lighting device including a housing mounted inside a vehicle, a light source part, and an aluminum film part of which a shape changes according to an operation of the light source part. The vehicle lighting device may further include a motor part that applies a load to the aluminum film part, wherein a shape of the aluminum film part may be deformed or restored according to the load applied by the motor part. When the load is applied by the motor part, at least a portion of the aluminum film unit may form a repeated pattern. When the load is not applied by the motor part, the formed pattern may be removed, and the aluminum film part may be restored to an original shape before formation of the pattern. The vehicle lighting device may further include a pattern plate through which a light emitted from the light source part, or a light reflected by the aluminum film part passes.

 

US12257859B1 — ELECTRIC VEHICLE MOTOR WITH DOUBLE DISC BRAKES — Luo Chunyan (China) — The motor is a core component of an electric vehicle. It usually consists of two parts, including a stator and a rotor. The stator is provided with a winding, and a magnetic field is produced when current is introduced. The rotor rotates under the action of the magnetic field. In the existing e-vehicle motor, the motor of an electric bicycle motor is provided with a single-sided disc brake. The braking effect is poor in long-time downhill periods or on rainy days, and it is easy to cause traffic accidents due to poor braking under the condition of high speed. Therefore, an electric vehicle motor with double disc brakes is provided. The motor includes a first disc brake, a motor body, fixed bolts and a second disc brake. The first disc brake and the second disc brake are both made of aluminum alloy materials.

 

US12313156B1 — TRANSMISSION COOLING SYSTEM — Gale C. Banks, III (USA) — Vehicle transmissions frequently include a roughly cylindrically shaped case with a bottom lubricant pan bolted thereto. Temperatures within the transmission may become elevated because of friction and fluid mixing effects to a level injurious to the included lubricant, bearings, gears, clutches, seals and the like. While vehicles may include transmission coolers utilizing air or water to try to help cool transmission lubricant, recent testing of vehicle transmissions under substantial sustained load suggests that transmission lubricant can reach temperatures sufficient to degrade lubricant performance and reduce transmission and lubricant life. The present invention is directed to vehicle transmission lubricant pans that help dissipate heat to prevent degradation of transmission lubricant performance. The pan (14), which is made of aluminum, has inner cooling fins on the first side. These are configured for contact with lubricant in the lubricant sump. The pan has outer cooling fins on a second side. These extend over the pan area and close the transmission lubricant sump. The outer cooling fins are configured for contact with air. Some of the inner cooling fins and the outer cooling fins are aligned to optimize heat transfer from the inner to the outer cooling fins.

 

US12397918B1 — FUEL CELL TURBOELECTRIC FAN FOR AN AIRCRAFT — Tennessee Technological University (USA) — In recent times, there has been a growing interest in hybrid-electric propulsion systems for aircraft. However, the switching stations or terminal stations necessary in these current systems tend to be relatively heavy, resulting in inefficiencies in the design of hybrid-electric aircraft. Therefore, the development of a propulsion system for an aircraft capable of addressing these limitations would be highly advantageous. A challenge is the massive amount of electricity that has to be distributed throughout the aircraft. The large amount of electrical power that typically has to be distributed requires significant mass and volume for transmitting the electrical power (copper/aluminum wires) or superconducting electrical distribution system. The aircraft propulsion system disclosed herein is a transformative technology dramatically increasing efficiency and capability while being fuel-flexible for both small and large aircraft platforms.

 

US12258132B1 — AIRCRAFT SEAT FRAME — Abdelilah Chennaoui and Aamir Jafri (USA) — Conventional aircraft seat frames incur a high cost to manufacture. Additionally, because of the number of parts used to make conventional aircraft seats, manufacturing is complex due to the design and the design is difficult to certify. Because conventional designs also allow for reclining of the seats, use of the seat can encroach on the personal space of the passenger sitting behind the reclining passenger. Therefore, what is needed is a universal aircraft seat frame requiring fewer parts, decreasing the complexity of manufacturing and the overall weight of the frame as comparted to conventional aircraft seats. To manufacture the frame of the present disclosure, a sheet of a rigid material, such as aluminum, may be bent at the three bend areas to create a basic bench shape. When desired the additional bends may be made to the back support to create arm rests. The various orifices may be stamped or otherwise cut from the material.

 

US12275447B1 — MULTIPLE PURPOSE DOLLY — NPS Public Furniture Corp (USA) — An adjustable multi-purpose dolly for transferring furniture or objects of a plurality of sizes. The adjustable multi-purpose dolly may include a center frame assembly, a first end extension assembly and a second end assembly. The center frame assembly may form a bottom portion of the adjustable multi-purpose dolly. The first end extension assembly may form a first end portion of the adjustable multi-purpose dolly. The center frame assembly may include a middle support bar, a rectangular tube that may be formed from aluminum. Aluminum may be used to form the angle support and the angle lock cylinder. The first and second middle frame assemblies may include a crossbar mounting plate, two crossbar channels and a middle connection. These may also be formed from aluminum.

 

US12269596B1 — LAVATORIES ON A BLENDED WING BODY AIRCRAFT — Jetzero Inc (USA) — A blended wing body (BWB) aircraft having a main body and wings with no clear demarcation between the wings and the main body along a leading edge of the BWB aircraft. The aircraft further includes a passenger cabin located within the main body having one or more cross aisles extending along a lateral axis, wherein a shape of the passenger cabin is asymmetrical about a lateral axis, more than one passenger bays located within the passenger cabin, wherein each of the more than one passenger bays are separated by at least one cross aisle of the one or more cross aisles and one or more lavatories situated outside the more than one passenger bays and substantially adjacent to a perimeter of the passenger cabin, wherein each of the one or more lavatories are linked to one cross aisle of the one or more cross aisles. The structural elements (132) may be made of aluminum, and BWB 504 may comprise aluminum tubing coupled in various orientations.

 

US12269527B1 — DEVICE FOR MOTORIZING A MANUAL GOLF PUSH CART — Sergio Bixby (USA) — A device for motorizing a manual golf push cart comprises a housing containing a power unit and a control circuit. The power unit is operably connected to a motive element, such as a drive wheel, which engages the ground to propel the cart. An adjustable attachment mechanism connects the housing to the cart’s frame, allowing the device to be easily attached and detached without modifications to the cart. In one example implementation, the adjustable attachment mechanism may consist of telescopic aluminum tubes with a flip-lock system, allowing the user to extend and lock the tubes at the desired length. A control interface communicates with the control circuit to regulate the power unit’s operation, with power supplied by a source housed within the housing. The device provides a versatile solution for converting various manual golf push carts into motorized carts, offering enhanced user convenience and reducing physical effort during use.

 

US12280931B1 — PALLET RETROFIT AND WRAPPING SYSTEM AND RELATED METHODS — Greg Lucero (USA) — The invention provides a pallet retrofit system and method that is operable to improve a pallet with a pallet wrapping system that is operable to secure goods. The system may enhance the stability and protection of loads – goods, boxes, parcels – during transportation and storage by incorporating a series of strategically positioned blocks and adjustable straps. The blocks may be mounted on the pallet to form a stable structure for attaching a plurality of straps, which apply a uniform tension across the load. For metal pallets, such as those made from aluminum or steel, blocks constructed from the same metals are ideal and can be secured with bolts or rivets for high-strength attachment. In applications where mixed materials are used, adhesives such as epoxy or construction-grade glue may provide additional security.

 

US12259106B1 — ADJUSTABLE TELESCOPING OUTDOOR LIGHT SUSPENSION SYSTEM — Jason Hunter Connery (USA) — An adjustable camping/utility light suspension device, also known as IllumaCamp™, is designed to provide a versatile and stable solution for suspending a wide range of outdoor lighting systems, such as LED lights, and propane and gas lanterns. The device features a vertical portion that can telescope vertically up to 10 feet and a boom portion that can telescope horizontally up to 10 feet. The vertical telescoping portion can be rotated 180 degrees in either direction, allowing for optimal positioning of the light source to illuminate large areas. It is suitable for use on uneven terrain, with an iron spiked base, and on flat surfaces, with a weighted plastic base for stability. Constructed from high-strength materials like aluminum, the device is durable and easy to transport and set up in remote locations, and it is designed to withstand harsh outdoor conditions.

(China) — In the modern automotive industry, heat exchanger systems are important components to ensure proper operation and high efficiency of vehicles. The systems realize key functions of engine cooling, air conditioning refrigeration and the like through heat transfer. As a core material of the heat exchanger, aluminum is widely used in the manufacture of the heat exchangers due to its excellent heat conductive property, light weight and corrosion resistance. Aluminum alloy plates and profiles are manufactured through extrusion, rolling and other processes, and have good mechanical properties and heat conductivity. In automotive heat exchangers, these materials are commonly used as components for fins, flow channels, and housings. This invention relates to the technical field of die-casting aluminum alloys, in particular to a high-temperature-resistant brazing die-casting aluminum alloy, and a preparation method and application thereof.
