The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) is kicking off a multi-year process to revise its Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standards. The aim is to ensure that these standards will continue to drive the sector towards more sustainable production and responsible sourcing of aluminum.

As a The ASI commits to review its standards at least every five years, as part of being a code compliant member of ISEAL. As a result, the initiative carried out a comprehensive review of its Standards and Claims Guide in 2024. This review led the ASI Board to approve a full Standards Revision, with objectives to address the following:

  • Incorporate more differentiation into criteria, recognizing differing levels of maturity and defining pathways for improvement
  • Further strengthen credibility, with a greater focus on impacts and outcome-based criteria
  • Reflect better key priorities of Indigenous Peoples and other traditional communities
  • Enhance the value of certification and beyond certification programs, including supporting entities in meeting due diligence requirements and exploring new types of verified claims, such as product carbon footprinting.
  • Throughout the process, harmonization and alignment with other standards will be a priority, building on ASI’s extensive benchmarking work to date.

The revision will result in updated standards, anticipated for release in early 2027 (followed by a transition period).

Participate in the Process

As a multi-stakeholder initiative, the ASI standards are designed to reflect the priorities of industrial producers and consumers across the aluminum value chain, civil society, impacted communities and rights holders, and other key stakeholders. This balance in perspectives, knowledge, and impact is built into the ASI’s core governance model, with a Standards Committee composed of representatives from industry, civil society, and the Indigenous Peoples Advisory Forum.

Therefore, diverse input from stakeholders is essential for the success of the Standards Revision process. There are multiple ways to participate, starting with attending the launch webinars on March 20, 2025 to learn more about the revision process. There are two sessions, one at 9 am CET (the Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Europe, Africa) and 5 pm CET (for the Americas).

Stakeholders can also join one of the six thematic working groups, which will serve as a sounding board to follow the development process, raise considerations, and feed back to the ASI Secretariat and Standards Committee. Please note that these Working Groups are composed primarily of representatives from ASI member organizations. However, non-members can be included in Working Groups based on relevant expertise and capacity of the groups. Learn more about the working groups and apply to the join (applications are open until March 31).
