Organized by The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS), the TMS 2023 Annual Meeting & Exhibition will be held March 19-23, 2023, in San Diego, CA. With ten technical symposia, a keynote session of invited talks, two respected proceedings volumes, an educational short course, and more, the event is expected to provide a key meeting place for the world’s leading aluminum and magnesium industries and researchers.

The meeting’s core light metals programming is made up of ten technical symposia plus a special symposium honoring industry leader Barry J. Welch, titled “60 Years of Taking Aluminum Smelting Research and Development from New Zealand to the World.”

Additional symposia will include:

  •  Alumina & Bauxite
  •  Aluminum Alloys, Characterization, and Processing
  •  Aluminum Industry Emissions Measurement, Reporting & Reduction
  •  Aluminum Reduction Technology
  •  Aluminum Waste Management and Utilization
  •  Cast Shop Technology
  •  Electrode Technology for Aluminum Production
  •  Light Elements Technology
  •  Magnesium Technology 2023
  •  Scandium Extraction and Use in Aluminum Alloys.

The light metals programming will kick off at TMS 2023 with a keynote session. The theme for this year’s session will be “Research and Process Optimization through Computer Modelling and Digitalization,” which is organized by Dmitry Eskin of Brunel University. It will include the presentations from leaders in industry, government, and academia, including Carl Duchesne, Laval University; Andre-Felipe Schneider, Hatch Ltd.; Nancy Holt, Hydro Aluminium AS; Marlen Bertram, International Aluminium Institute; Matthew Krane, Purdue University; Markus Apel, Access RWTH-Aachen; Arild Hakonsen, Hycast AS; and Elsa Olivetti, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The Magnesium Technology 2023 symposium at TMS 2023 will also open with a keynote session. It will feature several notable speakers, including Andrew Sherman, Terves LLC; Aaron Palumbo, Big Blue Technologies; Norbert Hort, Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon; and Carolyn Woldring, Magsorbeo Biomedical.

The Light Metals Division luncheon will include a lecture from Slade Gardner, president and founder of Big Metal Additive, who will discuss “Rewriting Design, Cost, and Schedule Paradigms for Satellites with Aluminum Hybrid Additive Manufacturing.”

Full registrants to TMS 2023 will be able to attend all light metals technical sessions, as well as receiving electronic access to the respected Light Metals 2023 and Magnesium Technology 2023 proceedings. They will also receive a three-day pass to the TMS 2023 exhibition.

For an additional fee, registrants may also participate in the one-day Introduction to Aluminum Electrolysis Course on March 19. This course will cover basic topics related to using AlSem tools for aluminum electrolysis and is ideal for anyone who wants to understand the theoretical background of the aluminum electrolysis process. The course will be led by Marc Dupuis of GeniSim Inc.

The discounted early registration deadline for TMS meeting and exhibition is January 31, 2023, and the deadline to book housing at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront — the TMS2023 headquarters hotel — is February 23. For more information, visit www.tms.org/TMS2023.
