Nordural, one of Europe’s largest primary aluminum smelters and a subsidiary of Century Aluminum, signed a long-term power management agreement with SnerpaPower, a leading energy technology provider in the electricity sector — marking a significant milestone for both companies. With this step, Nordural becomes SnerpaPower’s largest customer to date, underscoring the growing role of intelligent energy management in driving industrial competitiveness and the global energy transition.
“Aluminum is an essential material for the green transition, and producing it sustainably is a responsibility we take seriously,” said Guðrún Halla Finnsdóttir, business development manager at Nordural. “By working with SnerpaPower, we are strengthening our ability to use power more efficiently, while supporting a secure and stable electricity system. This partnership is an important step in demonstrating how aluminum production and smart technology can go hand in hand.”
Nordural operates the Grundartangi smelter in Iceland with an annual capacity of around 300,000 tonnes. The smelter supplies responsibly produced aluminum to global markets and is a leader in sustainability. Among its products is Natur-Al™, a certified low-carbon aluminum with a CO₂ footprint less than one-quarter of the industry average, powered entirely by Iceland’s renewable hydro and geothermal resources.
The company is committed to responsible production, efficient use of energy and materials, and continuous improvements in environmental and social performance. Through this new power agreement, Nordural will receive advanced energy management and flexibility services through SnerpaPower’s proprietary software platform. The solutions enable Nordural to optimize and automate power schedules and orders while fulfilling contractual obligations and supporting the stability of the power grid.
SnerpaPower’s software platform now manages over 1,200 MW of power-intensive load, optimizing energy use, automating power scheduling, and contributing to grid stability. The joint initiative reinforces the role of aluminum producers and technology innovators in advancing renewable integration, industrial resilience, and advanced grid services. It also illustrates how collaboration between energy-intensive industries and digital, climate tech companies can deliver both environmental and economic value.
“We are proud to partner with Nordural, a cornerstone of Iceland’s industrial sector and a global leader in aluminum production,” noted Íris Baldursdóttir, CEO and cofounder of SnerpaPower. “This agreement reflects the confidence of one of Europe’s largest energy consumers in our solutions and highlights the critical role of flexibility in ensuring that Iceland remains competitive in a changing energy landscape. We’re confident that SnerpaPower’s solution will bring significant value to Nordurál’s operations. Together, we are proving that innovation and industry can accelerate the path to a sustainable future.”
