Century Aluminum Company has announced plans to restart over 50,000 MT of idled production at its Mt. Holly, SC smelter. The company will invest approximately $50 million in the effort, creating over 100 new jobs and boosting U.S. primary aluminum output by nearly 10%. The restart will bring the plant, now at 75% capacity, to full production by June 30, 2026—a level not reached since 2015.

The move follows President Trump’s recent increase of Section 232 tariffs to 50% on aluminum imports without exceptions, aimed at bolstering domestic manufacturing.

“Today’s announcement was made possible by President Trump’s commitment to onshoring manufacturing of critical metals, protecting America’s national security, and supporting American workers,” said CEO Jesse Gary. “Our team stands ready to lead the resurgence of domestic primary aluminum, starting with Mt. Holly’s return to full production.”

At full capacity, Mt. Holly generates over $890 million annually for South Carolina’s economy, driven in part by average wages of $100,000 for jobs directly supported by Century Aluminum, according to a 2024 University of South Carolina study.

The restart is also supported by a preliminary agreement with South Carolina Public Service Authority (Santee Cooper) to extend Mt. Holly’s power contract through 2031, pending final terms and state and county incentives.

Industry advocates say the project strengthens both local economies and the nation’s strategic metals supply chain. “Aluminum is critical to our economic and national security,” said Joe Quinn, Executive Director of SAFE’s Center for Strategic Industrial Materials (C-SIM). “There is more to do, particularly ensuring affordable power for all U.S. smelters, but maximizing Mt. Holly is a strong start.”
