Owl’s Head Alloys in Bowling Green, Kentucky, was awarded a long-term agreement to supply recycled aluminum for the new rolling mill being constructed by Aluminum Dynamics, LLC in Columbus, Mississippi, a newly formed subsidiary of Steel Dynamics. The $2.2 billion rolling mill aims to supply sustainable, low-carbon aluminum sheet products to the beverage can, automotive, and industrial markets. As such, the mill will require a significant amount of scrap and recycled aluminum as a raw material for its mill.
“Aluminum Dynamics received numerous bids from the industry, but Owl’s Head Alloys stood out as the leader in the secondary aluminum processing industry due to its exceptional quality and customer service,” said Bernardo Bulnes, melt, cast and raw materials coordinator for Aluminum Dynamics.
In order to supply Aluminum Dynamics and meet demand from its existing customers, Owl’s Head has decided to expand its operations. The company formed an agreement to purchase property in nearby West Point, Mississippi, where it will be investing significantly over the next five years to increase capacity. It will also be hiring locally for production, maintenance, and some management roles.
“The opportunity to be involved with the newest rolling mill in North America in over 40 years is the result of hard work by a dedicated team that focuses on its customers’ needs at every turn,” said Michael J. Boyle, president of Owl’s Head Alloys.
Owl’s Head Alloys is an aluminum recycling plant founded with the aim of promoting sustainable practices and a commitment to quality and integrity. Starting with a single furnace and 20 employees in 2002, it has grown to five furnaces and 150 employees who are included in the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), which grants 100% ownership to the employees. All of this reflects Owl’s Head Alloys’ closely held core values of quality, environment and people.
David Bradford, chairman of Owl’s Head Alloys, proudly stated, “The growth we’ve experienced in 20 years speaks volumes of our potential, and we greatly look forward to our future.”
