JW Aluminum is investing $8.5 million to install a new tension leveling and slitting line at its Goose Creek, South Carolina, facility. The new coil processing equipment is designed to maximize output and increase efficiency, as well as ensuring optimum material flatness.

The 84 inch wide line will be custom built by Red Bud Industries and Machine Concepts located in Red Bud, Illinois, with the tension leveling modules to be provided by Machine Concepts located in Minster, Ohio. The configuration of the line assures rapid coil loading, setup, and threading.

In addition, the line will include automation that will increase throughput and enhance the overall safety of the system, as well as advanced controls and diagnostics that continuously monitor the line to ensure proper operation. Technological innovations featured include the “CamberTrac” system that automatically tracks and moves the slitting head with the material, assuring that camber is not cut into the coil.

Installation will begin in the third quarter of 2019 and the line will be fully operational by the end of 2019.

In addition to providing improved capabilities for its existing operations, the new line will also accommodate the expansion project, which is currently underway at JW Aluminum’s Goose Creek facility. The expansion will include new melters, a twin belt continuous caster, and a hot tandem mill that will enable the company to produce increased coil widths. It is expected to be fully operational in 2020

“This new leveling and slitting line will be one of the widest in the industry,” said Ryan Roush, chief commercial officer of JW Aluminum. “We’re looking forward to installing this new line in preparation for our future state width capability in 2020 and as importantly, continuing to provide the level of flatness that is critical to our customers.”
