Rexam has partnered with Arriaca, an internationally renowned Spanish microbrewer, to launch Spain’s first ever canned craft beer. The craft brewer will package its Rubia, IPA, and Vikingathor beers in 330 ml aluminum cans. The cans will be manufactured out of Rexam’s La Selva, Spain, plant and will be available in the Spanish domestic market through various retail channels.
“We made this decision having recognized the benefits of the can in terms of sustainability and its capacity to conserve liquids,” saidJesus León, CEO of Cervezas Arriaca. “Rexam is well known in the industry for their support of craft brewers and we trust them to offer the support and education we need to make this transition. In recent years, the craft beer market has experienced tremendous growth, and the striking design of the new can is key to attract and engage new consumers. We love the cans and we know our customers will too!”
A number of craft beer brewers around the world have moved from glass bottles to the aluminum can format (to the point that this has created aluminum can shortages in some areas), in part driven by more affordable ways of canning, including mobile canners and in part because of the unique and fun designs the cans are capable of providing.
The minimalist yet bold can designs were designed by Arriaca and Rexam reflect the rebellious nature of the pioneering brand. The design includes a matt finish over varnish to give the cans a premium finish, echoing the quality of the beer and appealing to Arriaca’s discerning target audience, reported Rexam.
“We’re thrilled to work with another craft brewer on the continent and expand our portfolio of customers outside the UK,” said Fernando Muñoz, Rexam sales manager. “Increasingly, craft brewers are recognizing the suitability of the can and assisting them in this transition is mutually beneficial for both parties. Arriaca is leading the trend in Spain and we look forward to supporting more Spanish craft brewers who choose to take the same route.”
Rexam has also assisted craft brewers, including, Magic Rock, Metalman, Concrete Cow, and Southside Brewing Company, in making the move in packaging format, from glass bottle to can.
