AMAG Austria Metall AG, a leading Austrian premium supplier of high-quality cast and rolled aluminum products, completed the installation of a €50 million state-of-the-art surface treatment line at its facility in Ranshofen, Austria. The new line is expected to set new standards in terms of efficiency and quality. According to the company, this is a significant step towards strengthening its position as a leading specialist for high-quality aluminum surfaces.

“In view of the growing demand for high-quality and precision processed aluminum rolled products, advanced production technologies are becoming increasingly important,” the company stated. “Surfaces play a decisive role in bonding, welding, soldering, varnishing, and forming parts. The quality of the surface is of central importance to many of AMAG’s customers from different industries. In addition to its aesthetic value, it has a significant influence on functionality and a variety of possible further processing and coating options.”

Advanced Surface Treatment

The 115 m long surface treatment line, built by Andritz AG, is situated within a building that was constructed by regional suppliers. The new line enables the surface treatment of aluminum strips with a thickness of up to 5 mm. The core element of the line is a highly efficient device — designed specifically for AMAG’s wide range of products — for cleaning the surface of hot-rolled and cold-rolled aluminum strips.

The line also features advanced digital solutions, which are being used to increase the quality and productivity in the surface treatment process. These digital solutions also support the plant’s sustainability goals, by managing the process to reduce its carbon footprint. All production-related data from the surface treatment line is recorded and utilized using modern data analysis methods. In addition, the electric heating is exclusively powered by green energy, and the integrated wastewater treatment system is designed to contribute to environmentally friendly production.

The surface treatment line produces aluminum surfaces that are used in a wide range of applications in the architectural sector, decorative surfaces in consumer electronics, the cosmetics industry, radiator- and heat exchangers (braze clad products), and the automotive industry for trim parts and for tread plates.

“The products from the new surface treatment line enable our customers to further increase the quality of their products and stability of their own production processes,” said Helmut Kaufmann, CEO and chief technology officer of AMAG Austria Metall. “Through environmentally friendly production, we also reduce our carbon footprint and support our customers in achieving their sustainability goals.”
