Gulf Aluminium Rollng Mill (GARMCO), an aluminum recycling and rolling company located in Bahrain, successfully completed a number of development projects totaling US$24 million. These projects at GARMCO are in accordance with the restructuring plan approved by the company in November 2021.

“We are implementing the requirements of the reorganization plan by continuing the development and expansion process in an effort to increase the company’s regional and global competitiveness,” said Mohamed Rafea, chief executive officer of GARMCO. “This has enabled us to record our highest level of profitability since the company’s inception as well as make our first repayment to creditors in the past year.”

The investment projects include a US$7.5 million expansion of the aluminum casting facility with an additional continuous casting line for coils. This will help the company to increase productivity, diversify products, and expand into new markets.

Another US$17 million was implemented on additional initiatives, including the installation of a scrap preparation furnace designed to remove paint and dyes from scrap for recycling. This enables the company to recycle aluminum waste from the local market into high quality aluminum for international markets. The initiatives also included a line for the treatment of water and industrial oils, which is in accordance with the Kingdom of Bahrain’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.

Furthermore, GARMCO continues to implement its plan for reducing energy consumption and is in the process of modernizing the engine of its hot rolling mill and introducing a nitrogen unit. The company is also expanding production lines and enhancing a number of the factory’s main units in order to improve efficiency and productivity.

Arif Rahimi, chairman of GARMCO and a board representative of Mumtalakat, stated, “We are pleased with the significant transformation in the company’s operations and performance, as well as the positive results at various levels of the reorganization plan that GARMCO is implementing with the support of all shareholders represented by the board of directors and led by Mumtalakat.”

Established in 1981, GARMCO produces 165,000 tonnes of of high quality, rolled products annually. The rolled products include 1xxx, 3xxx, 5xxx, and 8xxx alloys for a variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, marine, electronics, and building and construction, among others. The company is supplied with primary aluminum slab from Aluminium Bahrain (Alba), as well as having its own recycling and casting operations. The company is now regarded as one of the leading downstream aluminum manufacturing facilities in the Middle East for rolling, cutting, and fabricating high-grade aluminum that is exported to regional and global markets.
