Elval, the only Greek producer of flat rolled aluminum products, placed an order with Primetals Technologies to upgrade its drive system at a 6-high cold rolling mill in Oinofyta, north of Athens. The modernization will increase reliability and resolve availability issues primarily caused by an obsolete drive system.
Primetals Technologies will perform the upgrade, as well as provide commissioning services. The upgrade involves the installation of a new SL150 cycloconverter, including drive control systems, a new power section, auxiliary equipment, and spare parts. The existing 6 MW synchronous motor is retained as part of the project.
A notable feature of this project is the smooth utilization of the drive transformer, which will be made possible thanks to the new control system. This enhancement results in a prolonged equipment lifetime and increased availability. Additionally, the modernization ensures the drive system meets current and future spare-part supply conditions.
Elval, which is the aluminum rolling division of ElvalHalcor SA, is a leading force in the global market for aluminum products. This is showcased through its strong production base across 15 plants, cutting-edge technology, and a solid market presence in more than 90 countries.
With state-of-the-art production facilities in Greece, it operates the second-largest aluminum rolling plant in Europe in terms of hot-rolling capacity. Elval processes and manufactures flat-rolled aluminum products and solutions for diverse and demanding applications, serving industries like packaging, transportation, heating, ventilation, building and construction, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R), as well as other industrial applications.
The complete revamp of the drive system is planned for January 2026.
