Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO), a business unit of Vedanta Aluminium, is expanding wire rod production capacity to meet growing demand. This is part of the smelter’s ongoing plans to double its overall aluminum production capacity from 570,o00 tpy to 1 million tpy, which is currently in its final stages of commissioning.

“Aluminum wire rods are indispensable to building a resilient and future-ready digital backbone for India,” said Rajiv Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium. “At Vedanta, we are proud to offer a BIS-certified portfolio of high-performance grades that cater to the evolving needs of the telecom and power sectors. With a capacity expansion underway at BALCO, we are poised to meet India’s growing demand for advanced conductive materials while delivering on our sustainability commitments.”

India is aggressively scaling up its 5G networks, rural broadband, smart cities, and cloud infrastructure — and aluminum has emerged as a material of choice due to its high conductivity, corrosion resistance, and light weight, and strength. With India’s rapid growth in digital and industrial infrastructure, the company sees huge potential for high-quality aluminum wire rods to meet the demand.

BALCO produced more than 2 million tonnes of aluminum wire rods in fiscal year 2025, with 100% of the output catering to growing domestic demand, particularly from states such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan. The company’s wire rod portfolio consists of high-performance grades tailored for critical applications, ranging from conductors and cable sheathing to tower grounding and optical fibre cabling.

The company was also India’s first to be awarded BIS 5484 certification for alloy wire rods, cementing its position as a leader in quality and innovation. These certified aluminum wire rods play a vital role in enabling seamless signal transmission and reliable network performance. This the increasing its production capacity will help the company in staying ahead of surging demand from sectors like telecom and power transmission surging, driven by digital expansion, energy diversification, and rapid urbanization.

In addition to telecom and power transmission being key sectors, BALCO’s aluminum wire rods also find essential applications across the automotive, electrical appliances, and steel industries — further enhancing their relevance to India’s industrial transformation.

Vedanta Aluminium is India’s largest producer of aluminum — manufacturing more than half of India’s aluminum (i.e., 2.42 million tonnes in FY25). It is a leader in value-added aluminum products that find critical applications in core industries. With its world-class aluminum smelters, alumina refinery and power plants in India, the company fulfills its mission of spurring emerging applications of aluminum as the “Metal of the Future” for a greener tomorrow.
