Alexin LLC commenced operation of rolling ingot (slab) casting at its Bluffton, Indiana, casting plant (watch a vignette of the first ingot cast in the video below). The $2.2 million project was approved in February of this year with final equipment installation and commissioning completed in mid-October. Alexin is now capable of producing 5xxx and 6xxx series rolling ingot up to 28 inches in thickness and 75 inches in width, enabling it to serve the automotive flat-rolled products market.

“Just as we have done with the new diameters of extrusion log we commissioned in the past, the addition of rolling ingot to our already broad product offering will make Alexin a stronger company, better able to serve our customer base,” said Tom Horter, Alexin’s president and CEO. “Now we can serve both our base industry (the extruders in our region) and those flat-rolled products suppliers who are in need of a regional scrap or ingot supply solution.”

Alexin also recently achieved ISO/TS 16949 certification for their Bluffton casting plant, an internationally recognized Quality Management System specification for the automotive industry. “The entire Alexin team worked hard to upgrade our manufacturing and quality systems in order to attain compliance with the ISO/TS 16949 standard and we are proud of this achievement,” said Todd Johnson, Alexin’s vice president of Technical Services. “This achievement will help Alexin meet all of our customers’ requirements, not just those serving the automotive industry.”
