The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) is initiating a Standards Revision in 2020-2021 to review all of the 6 ASI Documents – Performance Standard and Guidance, Chain of Custody Standard and Guidance, Assurance Manual, and Claims Guide. The revision will include multiple rounds of consultation, with opportunities for all members and stakeholders to have input.
The ASI Performance and Chain of Custody Standards were launched in late 2017, providing a certification program for the aluminum value chain, focused on responsible production, sourcing, and stewardship of this important industrial metal.
The Standards Revision will provide the opportunity to clarify and improve ASI’s certification program based on:
- implementation experience and identified improvement areas
- stakeholder feedback and evolving expectations
- good practice approaches in certification programs and data governance
The deadline to submit comments to the Standards Revision process and Terms of Reference is June 9 2020. The revised ASI Documents are anticipated to be finalized by December 2021.
Partnership with LME
The ASI has developed an MOU with the London Metal Exchange (LME) in order to underpin collaboration between the two organizations on responsible aluminum value chains. The focus includes the 2020-2021 revision of the ASI standards in light of the LME’s Responsible Sourcing initiative; the potential use of ASI certification, metrics, and audits by the LME; ASI monitoring and evaluation projects; and other relationship strengthening activities that can promote the shared values of both organizations.
