What is lightweight, consists of one material, and can be recycled and returned in a new packaging format in just 60 days? Ball Corporation’s new Infinity™ aluminum bottle. Designed to be made again and again, the new impact extruded aluminum bottle can not only be used for food and beverage containers, but also is suitable for packaging almost any liquid (including shampoos and conditioners, soaps, body creams, and more). The Infinity is Ball’s circular solution, an alternative to plastic packaging and its inherent pollution.
Plastic is Old News
Ever wandered down the shampoo aisle at the grocery store and wondered why all the products are packaged in plastic? People in today’s world are highly dependent on plastic, despite the fact that every year 8 million tonnes of plastic enters the ocean — equating to a garbage truck full of plastic being dumped into the ocean every single minute. Furthermore, plastic pollution in terms of microplastics has been measured all over the earth, present even in the air we breathe and the water we drink.
“Plastic waste that ends up in the natural environment has led to more public discussion about packaging, its lifecycle and recyclability,” said Jason Galley, director of innovation and sustainability, Ball. “Consumers are demanding more environmentally friendly solutions for packaging their everyday products. We combined our product design and sustainable aluminum packaging expertise to develop another truly circular packaging solution.”
Ball Corporation has shown a serious commitment to environmental responsibility with the introduction of products like the Infinity bottle and aluminum cups. The recyclable aluminum cups were launched by the company last Fall, with a vision to replace the traditional plastic party cup. Ball even invested in a new facility to ramp up production of the sustainable cups, which will be adjacent to the company’s existing aluminum beverage can manufacturing plant in Rome, Georgia.
Infinitely New Aluminum
Similar to Ball aluminum cups, the Infinity bottles can be easily sorted and recycled. The impact extruded aluminum bottle is a mono-material, making it convenient to recycle easily in any facility that accepts aluminum. Akin to other aluminum products, the aluminum bottles can be recycled an infinite number of times without losing quality, hence the name. In fact, 75% of aluminum ever produced (since 1888) is still in use today.
In addition to their recyclability, aluminum bottles have a number of other advantages that help improve resource efficiency and enable circularity. For example, aluminum is lightweight, which saves energy in transportation.
The Infinity bottles are available in a range of sizes and formats. Once bottles are ready for design, they can be branded without the use of sleeves or labels. Therefore, creative and complex designs can be printed on aluminum using the full circumference of the bottle. Additional shaping and embossing solutions, such as Ball’s 360° technology, are also available. This enables customers to customize the bottles to create unique packaging and differentiate themselves on the shelf.
