M-D Building Products Acquires Cardinal Aluminum Co.

M-D Building Products buys aluminum extruder Cardinal Aluminum

M-D Building Products, Inc., a family-owned company based in Oklahoma City, has acquired the assets of Cardinal Aluminum Co. and its subsidiaries, Cardinal Architectural and Designer Moulding.

M-D holds a leading position in the U.S. aluminum extrusion market, as well serving the residential and commercial weatherization, caulking, flooring, and installation markets. This acquisition will enable the company to expand its manufacturing presence and capabilities.

“This acquisition strengthens our already diverse product portfolio and supports our strategic growth plans by expanding our current offerings, deepening our internal vertical integration, while opening new markets and advancing our position as an industry leading consolidator,” said Loren Plotkin, CEO and chairman of the board for M-D Building Products.  “Similar to M-D, Cardinal has a long history of engineering and manufacturing customized products.  As two privately held, family-owned companies, we share similar core values, and we are pleased to welcome the Cardinal family to M-D.”

Based in Louisville, Kentucky,  Cardinal Aluminum was founded in 1946 under the primary principle of helping customers succeed. The company manufactures custom aluminum extrusions and provides fabrication and finishing services (including CNC machining and powder coating capabilities) to customers across North America.

“As Cardinal celebrates 75 years of business, we recognized it was time to secure the long-term future of the company by joining with M-D, one of the top manufacturers in the country,” said William “Chip” Edwards, president and CEO of Cardinal Aluminum Co. “We have admired M-D and the Plotkin family for years as they have grown their company through several strategic acquisitions the past decade. Cardinal and M-D Building Products represent the perfect fit.  Our philosophies, values and capabilities are aligned, and we believe Cardinal’s future as part of M-D is bright as America’s manufacturing sector expands over the next several years.”

Plotkin added, “I am grateful for Chip and the wonderful business he and his family have created and grown the past 75 years.  We have much in common as family-owned businesses. We are looking forward with high anticipation to welcoming the Cardinal team and working together to integrate our operations and grow the business.”
