Penrhos Spirits, Herefordshire, U.K., is revamping their line of award-winning spirits by making the switch from glass packaging to 100% recycled, reusable aluminum containers. As part of an ongoing commitment to sustainability and improving its carbon footprint, the Penrhos team decided that using aluminum bottles would provide customers with a more sustainable option. The company’s range of spirits will transition to aluminum bottles throughout 2023.

To celebrate the switch, Penrhos is introducing a limited edition “Wonky Raspberry” flavor, using the excess raspberries, cultivated in summer 2022 from the company’s fruit farm. Using imperfect fruit from their farms, Penrhos Spirits makes a variety of 40% ABV drinks including London Dry Rhubarb and Apple & Elderflower.

“At Penrhos Spirits, we are always looking for ways to improve our sustainability in both the orchards and distillery,” said Charles Turner, co-founder of the company. “This launch marks an exciting moment in the Penrhos journey, and if we can do it as a relatively small, growing brand, then we want to raise a challenge to the wider drinks community too, to get on board.”

The new aluminum bottle has many advantages. They are much lighter to transport, weighing only 80 g versus the spirits’ previous glass bottle, which weighed 750 g. Additionally, the aluminum allows the company to use less packaging, save space in its warehouses, and transport the beverages with less breakages.

“We are in the process of becoming more sustainable,”said Harriet Williams, sales director, Penrhos Spirits. “Almost 75% of aluminum ever produced is still in the material loop today as aluminum can constantly be recycled without any changes in properties. Recycling an aluminum bottle can save up to 95% of energy used to make a new bottle.”

About Penrhos Spirits

Charles Turner and Richard Williams founded Penrhos Spirits in 2018. The two fruit farmers and lovers of gin and decided to take the imperfect fruit from their orchards to create a spirit that was farm-made and rich in provenance using their own orchard and farm botanicals, grain spirit, and local natural water.

After two years of research and recipe testing that helped to gain a local following, Turner and Williams kick-started the company with the purchase of an 150-litre copper still and a project to convert a 250-year old former cow shed into a working distillery. Both of the founder’s wives also joined the company, and together they created the award-winning Penrhos Spirits Dry Gin, closely followed by Penrhos Spirits Rhubarb Gin, Penrhos Spirits Apple & Elderflower Gin, Penrhos Spirits Blueberry Gin Liqueur, Penrhos Spirits Zero Raspberry and Penrhos Honey Spiced Rum.
