Summary: On Monday, October 4, 2010 a ring dam reservoir burst at an alumina plant at the Ajkai Timfoldgyar plant in Kolontar, Hungary, releasing  approximately 700,000 cubic meters of a mixture of caustic bauxite residue and water, flooding three villages, which killed many animals, at least nine people, and injured over 120 with chemical burns. This article looks at what may have caused the disaster and presents the tenets of the red mud problem, as well as some possible alternatives for the treatment and storage of red mud.
